If you're an adventurous driver who wants a vehicle that can keep up, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner is an appealing option in the Toyota lineup. It's capable, rugged, and packed with impressive features.
Trims (Exterior)
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is a truck-based midsize SUV that comes in eight trim levels. The options are SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro. The base model comes well-equipped for adventure with a set of 17-inch wheels, roof rails, underbody skid plates, LED headlights, and a power-operated rear window. Upgrades on the Trail Special Edition include dark-painted wheels and trim, and a roof rack.
If you're shopping for a sportier model, check out the TRD Sport trim. It has branded trim, firmer suspension tuning, and a hood scoop. The TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium come with off-roading features, such as a locking rear differential and several exterior accents. Engine (Power)
Every 2022 4Runner has the same 4.0-liter V-6 engine beneath its hood. It pumps out 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, pairing with a five-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard on most trims, although the two TRD Off-Road options come standard with four-wheel drive. You can also upgrade any of the other trims to include Toyota's four-wheel-drive system.
Performance
This SUV is one of the most capable options when it comes to tackling rough terrain. It beats out nearly all options in the segment and it's one of the only rugged and capable models offered with seating for up to seven. Some of its best off-roading features include raised ground clearance and terrain-specific driving modes built into the four-wheel-drive system. If you do plan to do some off-roading, the TRD Off-Road trims have the features you need to explore the world around you.
Interior
Although seating for five comes standard, you can upgrade most 4Runner models to include a third row of seating. Standard convenience and comfort features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power driver's seat, manual climate control with rear vents, and split-folding and reclining second-row seats. Additionally, the base trim includes an eight-speaker sound system, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, and an 8-inch touch screen.
The higher trim levels are available with premium tech and comfort features. You can upgrade the SUV to include a premium audio system, navigation, and wireless charging. Optional convenience features include heated and ventilated front seats, keyless entry and ignition, leather upholstery, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Safety Features
Across the board, the 2022 4Runner comes well-equipped with Toyota Safety Sense-P, a suite of active driver aids. It bundles automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, a rearview camera, forward-collision mitigation, and adaptive cruise control. Additional upgrades include front and rear parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
