Did you know that your engine oil performs a variety of roles in your vehicle's daily operation and performance?  Have you ever wanted to know how to check and evaluate it for yourself? Well, you have come to the right place! With DARCARS Toyota of Baltimore, we will give you the steps to checking your engine oil all by yourself! Our goal is to set you up with the knowledge to troubleshoot issues if your car suddenly breaks down or if you want to check if it's time for an oil change.

  • Step 1: To safely check your engine oil, please allow at least 1 hour to pass for your oil to cool down before getting started.
  • Step 2: With a paper towel handy, you will want to locate the handle to the motor oil dipstick found on the left side of the engine. From here, you can unscrew the handle, remove the dipstick, and wipe off the excess oil from the dipstick.
  • Step 3: Next, place the dipstick back into the holder entirely while allowing it a minute to settle, then proceed to remove it again and check the oil line on the dipstick.
  • Step 4: The dipstick will likely have a line where you can gauge where the oil level should be. After getting your reading, you will know if your vehicle requires an oil change.

The state that your battery is in is crucial for enjoying and relying on your Toyota. There are many signs to check the health of your battery and many ways to prolong the life of your battery, helping you get the best performance out of it for longer. Check out our suggestions below to get started!

PRESERVE YOUR BATTERY

  • Tip 1: Your alternator is the component of your vehicle that keeps your battery charged. Ensuring the health of your alternator is crucial for getting the performance you need from your battery.
  • Tip 2: To allow your alternator to do its job and charge your battery, you will want to let your car run idle for at least 30 minutes every week.
  • Tip 3: Another way to maintain your battery is saying yes to long trips that allow you to keep your car on for a while and avoid short trips that require you to shut the engine on and off multiple times a day.

CHECK YOUR BATTERY CONDITION

  • Sign 1: Locate the leads on your battery. The lead is the metal bracket helping conduct the power supply. Check for any corrosion or any loose bolts.
  • Sign 2: Take a close look at your battery for discoloration or cracks.
  • Sign 3: A foul smell inside the cabin when the engine is in use.
