2022 Toyota Camry vs. Hyundai Sonata

2022 Toyota Camry vs. 2022 Hyundai Sonata

Overview

Although some automotive manufacturers are phasing out some of their sedans, certain models remain as top contenders in their respective segments. Two capable midsize options are the Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata. Explore how they differ to figure out which model is the right fit for your needs.

Impressive Trim Levels

The 2022 Toyota Camry is available in six well-equipped trim levels, including the SE Nightshade, which features blacked-out trim elements and bold styling. The top TRD trim level is the sportiest of the bunch, boasting a sport exhaust, a specially tuned suspension, aerodynamic trim, and a unique set of 19-inch wheels. Hyundai offers its Sonata sedan in five trim levels, but the base trim is somewhat sparsely equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels and LED front lighting. This model isn't available in a trim level that features blacked-out elements.

Power Beneath the Hood

The standard engine in the 2022 Sonata is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit that produces 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. It pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission that powers the front wheels. In order to get more power, you need to upgrade to the SEL Plus trim, which includes a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that puts out 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The third option is a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. This unit is available on the top N Line trim. The base engine offered on the Camry is a bit more powerful, putting out 203 horsepower. This sedan is also available with an upgraded version of the engine that pumps out 206 horsepower or a V-6 unit rated at 301 horsepower. All engines work with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive is available as an upgrade.

Premium Safety Features

If you want the best in safety features, choose the Camry to get forward-collision mitigation, a rearview camera, lane-keeping assist, road sign recognition, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. These features all come standard on all six trims. The Sonata offers some of these features as standard but doesn't come with road sign recognition or automatic high beams. The Camry is one of the longest-lasting nameplates in the automotive industry, and for good reason. This sedan is appealing, stylish, and capable, making it a top choice among those shopping in the midsize sedan segment.
