DARCARS Toyota of Baltimore

Jun 3, 2022

The Corolla name has been associated with reliability and longevity since Toyota first introduced it. Considering that, it’s no wonder we’re so excited to be seeing that same quality of engineering now being applied to the Corolla Cross, the Japanese automaker’s new compact crossover SUV. There’s a lot to be excited about with Toyota’s new vehicle hitting North American markets, so we decided to take a closer look at the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross.

Vehicle Class and Size

The Corolla Cross is new to North American markets in 2022 but was released previously (to widespread acclaim) in other markets around the world. The Corolla Cross is classed as a compact crossover SUV, placing it squarely in the midst of one of the most competitive vehicle classes in America. In terms of size, the Corolla Cross fits about midway between the C-HR and the RAV4 in their SUV line.

Drivetrain and Performance

The Corolla Cross runs on a 169-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which can be paired with either front- or all-wheel-drive, and operates on Toyota’s lauded continuously variable transmission. The Corolla Cross is rated for excellent fuel economy, with EPA estimates of 31 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. Though not available yet, a hybrid version of the Corolla Cross has been announced and will be available to buyers in 2023.

Interior and Comfort

On the inside, the Corolla Cross resembles newer Corollas and the Corolla Hatchback but with a higher SUV-oriented driving position and an improved 26.5 cubic feet of cargo space. The Corolla Cross also improved passenger comfort with increased space for your backseat passengers, so both you and your friends and family are sure to be comfortable on long drives in this Toyota crossover.

Technology and Features

The Corolla Cross comes with exceptional multimedia and infotainment features and lots of available options that drivers can also add to the mix. The easy-to-use layout of the infotainment system is similar to other recent Corolla models and comes standard with SiriusXM satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Drivers looking to upgrade can add wireless smartphone charging, rear USB ports, and an enhanced JBL audio system if they wish!

Safety On the Road

In recent years Toyota has been leading the pack in making safety and driver assistance features standard on their cars, and the Corolla Cross is no exception: it comes standard with lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automated emergency braking. Additional features can also be included, such as a blind spot monitor (with rear cross-traffic alert) and fog lights for increased visibility when driving at night.

With all of this in mind, we think it’s safe to say Toyota’s latest addition to their lineup is going to be a popular choice for drivers looking to find a balance between the fuel economy and reliability of the Corolla, with the practicality and cargo space of the compact SUV class, and we’re excited about it!
